You’ve heard it said time and again over the past 19 months: the pandemic fundamentally reshaped the way businesses interact with their customers. This brought a profound sense of urgency to the transformation agenda, as businesses adapted to weather a period of unprecedented disruption. Eight in ten organisations surveyed by DataIQ this year are pursuing a business transformation with the vision of becoming digital-first or customerfirst. However, customer-first doesn’t necessarily mean data-driven.

When data and business strategies aren’t aligned, businesses struggle to create the data-driven culture needed to positively reshape the customer relationship. Blockers come in the form of familiar issues such as legacy IT, poor data literacy and a lack of senior sponsorship. Organisations that have yet to overcome these obstacles risk being left behind, not least because transforming isn’t a one-off process. There will be a target operating model, but constant evolution in customer behaviour and market disruption will continually shift the goalposts. Change is now constant, and businesses looking to thrive in this new reality are increasingly dependent on data and insight.
