The 2019 edition of the DataIQ 100 is open for nominations. In what has been a highly-dynamic year for data and analytics, the look of next year’s list is likely to be very different from the one we published in February of this year. Just at the level of career moves, 22% of our Data Titans are now at different organisations.
Selecting the right candidates is challenging - picking a Top 10 especially so. What makes the process hard is the quality of the nominations we receive. Last year saw 475 names considered as part of the long list. The deadline for consideration is 30th November - nominations can be made up to that date via this online form. Next year’s DataIQ 100 will be announced on 28th February at a special lunch event.
Given the hectic eight months since we unveiled our current list, here is an update on what our Top 10 have been doing.
Elizabeth Denham, Information Commissioner, ICO Barely had we chosen her as our number one when the fake news and Cambridge Analytica scandals erupted and have continued to flow throughout the year. Just this week, Denham was in front of a DCMS select committee advocating a statutory code of practice and a super-regulator for political campaigning. And that is in addition to GDPR going live in May. Luckily, the right person has been in the right place to handle it all.
Gillian Tomlinson, chief data officer, RSA Widely-recognised as an influential CDO and also a figurehead for women in the data industry, Tomlinson has been leading on the data and analytics strategy for RSA, establishing a chief data office and building out a data tech platform.
Andy Day, group chief data officer, Pepper Financial Services Group Exited Sainsbury’s as part of an internal re-organisation and has moved into a new industry with a wide-ranging remit and a global perspective.
John Hussey, chief data officer, Barclays Moved up to CDO at the bank which found itself well placed to respond to GDPR having gone early with its customer-first strategy and internal information management policies.
Michael Greene, group data and analytics director, Tesco Combing the roles of CDO and CAO, with a remit that covers everything from Clubcard data to customer data, data science to automation, Greene has been ensuring the retailer has the right information on its shelves.
Paul Lodge, chief data officer, Department for Work and Pensions As head of DWP Digital’s data practice, Lodge is continuing to drive innovation and ensure that citizen data is used to understand people’s needs better and help to deliver better outcomes.
Lauren Sager Weinstein, chief data officer, Transport for London Alongside helping to ensure Londoner’s journeys are better managed and planned through the use of data, Sager Weinstein is also a figurehead for diversity in the industry and continues to be recognised in both roles.
Orlando Machado, chief data scientist, Aviva With the insurance industry facing a shake-up and Aviva pursuing a digital strategy, Machado finds his technical and business skills in greater demand than ever at the head of Quantum, the company’s global data science and analytics practice.
Martin Squires, director of data, insight and analytics, Homeserve After ten years at the food-to-pharma retailer, Squires has taken on the challenge of establishing and leading the data and marketing analytics practice in the UK’s leading home assistance provider.
Katia Walsh, global chief data and analytics officer, Vodafone With 27 countries to support through data and analytics, Walsh has been responsible for over 300 hires and has made big data a major area of focus for the telco.
