British fintech Starling Bank has revealed plans for further expansion, with a major recruitment drive for data scientists as part of plans to bring on board more than 400 extra staff.
The company has over one million customers across the UK, and offers personal and business banking services via its mobile app.
The new UK office will be based in Cardiff and will be its third hub alongside operations in London and Southampton. As well as data science roles, it is also hunting fraud and customer service specialists.
Starling Bank founder and CEO Anne Boden said: “The Welsh tech sector is one of the fastest digital economies outside of London, and continues to grow.
“We believe that London’s success as a fintech hub should enable it to spread wealth and jobs throughout the UK and the wider economy.”
Last month, Starling Bank raised £60 million from its investors and issued shares to all its employees.
North Wales Minister Ken Stakes said: “Our thriving fintech ecosystem has seen a number of companies make the move to Wales following Welsh Government advice and support, and it’s fantastic Starling has decided to do the same, creating 400 new jobs with more to come.
“As a government, we can be rightly proud of our role in growing the financial and related professional services sector in what is a very competitive global business environment.”
Last year, the Welsh Government pledged an additional £50 million in funding for the financial year to support the take-up of technology and digital skills in state schools.
Meanwhile in 2018, Wales launched the Welsh Data Science Graduate Programme, designed to give the country’s top talent added incentive to build their careers in the domestic data sector rather than move to England.
