The drive to use digital tools to get the nation fit is to be expanded to embrace the prison population, as part of an NHS England campaign to get prisoners to manage their own recovery from health and addiction problems.
NHS England’s prison healthcare commissioning unit says the tool is intended to support prisoners in a range of "clinically improved interventions to help them overcome drug addictions and psychosocial problems."
In a "prior information notice", published on the Official Journal of the EU’s Tenders Electronic Daily, the NHS says the tool "must support prisoners using a range of clinically approved interventions to reduce dependence upon drugs and other substances, providing psychosocial interventions to impact on smoking, drugs and alcohol using behaviour."
Other requirements are that it should provide a complementary groupwork package, be available in a range of languages, and provide the facility for prisoners to gain a recognised qualification to successfully complete the programme.
The notice also specifies the need for a community-based platform to help provide continuous care once they leave prison.
Last month, organisations which provide sport and physical activity were urged to make it easier for consumers to get active by seizing the opportunity of digital transformation. The call coincided with new Sport England research which showed it is twice as easy to order a takeaway than it is to book a sport or fitness class online.
