Research by recruitment firm Hays shows salaries for data architects rising by an average 16.7%, with SAP architects close behind with a 15.4% increase. This compares to average UK wage growth of 3.1%.
Other roles which saw high salary increases include database developer up 12.5%, and head of marketing, head of digital, data manager and information security engineer which all increased by 10%.
Akash Marwaha, managing director for Hays Scotland, said: “Overall, we’ve found that employers are pressing ahead with business plans. In fact, recruitment plans are at their highest for five years since our survey began, for both temporary and permanent recruitment. However, the lack of suitable candidates for technology roles is still a serious challenge."
Scotland is already looking to address these concerns with two of Edinburgh’s universities launching a scheme to train up to 100,000 Scots in data skills and help 1,000 businesses over the next decade.
The Data-Driven Innovation initiative – worth £661m – is part of the £1.3bn Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, and is being backed with cash from both the UK and Scottish governments.
With Scotland estimated to need about 13,000 additional workers each year with data skills, Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh universities plan to increase data science teaching for students, and to support schools and colleges across the region to provide digital skills teaching and training.
