The Information Commissioner's Office is hunting 10 organisations to take part in the test phase of its new regulatory sandbox which aims to promote "data protection by design".
The regulator first revealed plans to launch a test environment in its technology strategy, published last year, which will allow developers to test new ideas, products and services safely.
The idea is that the service will help identify and mitigate privacy risks during the development stage of new products. This means companies can make sure new products or services are fully compliant with data protection law before they go live.
In the beta phase, the ICO said it would be particularly interested in applications that address a set of specific data protection challenges.
These include the use of personal data in emerging technology, such as biometrics, wearables, cloud products and IoT; complex data-sharing agreements; and using existing data for new purposes.
In order to be selected for the sandbox, the product or service must be shown to be in the public interest, innovative, and be from organisations with a "mature and accountable approach to data protection".
Applications will open at the end of April.
In a video supporting the scheme, ICO head of assurance Chris Taylor said: "We are keen to hear from all kinds of organisations, whether you are a small tech firm from Manchester or a large innovation hub. We want to make sure we are playing a supportive role, helping innovators bring new products to market in a way that is safe and compliant."
