A new industry award is being launched in honour of former DMA chair, Opt-4 co-founder and data protection expert Rosemary Smith, who passed away in April.
The Data Protection Network Rosemary Smith Award for Responsible Marketing, backed by the DMA and the DM Trust, recognises Smith’s contribution to the data-driven marketing industry as well as the field of data protection.
Smith started her career in directory publishing, before joining the Periodical Publishers Association in 1984 to analyse the UK’s first Data Protection Act and explain its impact to members.
She then had roles at Mardev, Acxiom and The Prospect Shop before setting up her own company, RSA Direct, and, within a year, the separate data protection business Opt-4, together with former DMA board director and National Geographic client Jenny Moseley.
Smith and Moseley are co-authors of the book “New Data Protection Liabilities & Risks for Direct Marketers”. The duo are also co-founders of the Data Protection Network, an online resource for privacy officers and those with an interest in data protection matters.
The award, which is now open and is free to enter, will be judged on four key criteria, including privacy by design, customer needs, organisational support and impact measurement.
The shortlist will be announced in January; the winner will be revealed at the DMA Data Protection Conference in February 2020. Winners will receive £1,000 and a trophy and will be eligible for a 15% discount on IDM training courses.
Jenny Moseley, co-founder of Opt-4 and the DPN, said: “I’m delighted that we are able to commemorate Rosemary’s significant achievements in the fields of marketing and data privacy with the launch of this award. It is most appropriate that we are looking to recognise responsible marketing initiatives – something that Rosemary was passionate about. I’d like to encourage every marketing or data privacy team to enter.”
DMA managing director Rachel Aldighieri added: “Rosemary was a hugely influential figure within our industry, admired by many for her altruistic nature and focus on responsible marketing. It is only fitting that the DMA pledge our full support to the Rosemary Smith Award and we are delighted to offer the entrants access to the IDM’s world-renowned learning and development programmes.”
Entries can be submitted online at the DPN website. For more information contact Phil Donn, info@dpnetwork.org.uk
