Just days after British tech company Sage Group revealed its ambitious expansion strategy, Amazon has kicked off a major recruitment drive in the UK with plans to hire over 2,000 new workers, including data scientists, engineers and software developers.
About 10% of the jobs will be located in Amazon’s development centres in Cambridge, Edinburgh and London, where the company develops new tech, such as Alexa, drone delivery service Prime Air and others.
Late last year Amazon added another 1,000 jobs in the UK, with Manchester getting its first Amazon office. By February this year, the company had recruited a further 1,000 apprenticeships in the UK, with workers in different positions, including corporate and operations sites.
Amazon UK head of operations Doug Gurr said: "We are delighted to be able continue to invest and grow our UK business. The UK is a fantastic hub for global talent and the exciting, innovative work that takes place here benefits Amazon’s customers around the world."
According to a recent Juniper Research report, Amazon is starting to make inroads into the dominance of Facebook and Google. It claimed that the tech giant’s emerging digital ad business, driven by its unparalleled consumer retail data, will help boost its share of global digital adspend from 3% to 8% by 2023.
Amazon’s advertising revenues will reach $40bn (£31.5bn) by 2023; a growth of 470% from its ad revenues in 2018. Juniper predicts the firm will tap into its retail data and heavy investment in machine learning to offer efficient targeting through its advertising platforms, and attract users from the established duopoly.
