4. Ramneet Julka, Director, customer analytics and research, Barclays

Path to power

After an MBA from the leading management institute in India (IIM Bangalore), I joined Standard Chartered Bank as a management trainee and enjoyed creating information-led insights that changed the business outcomes. So I did various roles with American Express and Barclaycard, leading cards risk analytic teams in Europe and Africa. I then stepped into senior leadership at HSBC with a challenging opportunity to embed and expand its newly-established European business analytics team. I was really proud to build up a fantastic, energised analytics team where, successfully working with senior execs, we delivered huge business impact and customer benefit across multiple product lines for SME and corporate businesses. With advances in data science, emerging fintechs and the advent of open banking, retail banking is on a transformational journey. So I was excited to return to Barclays two years ago as head of its customer analytics and research team for 21 million retail customers. Being part of the retail banking leadership, it’s been a fantastic opportunity shaping the future vision and roadmap. I’m fortunate to be leading an amazing team powering its way through with innovative and customer-centric analytics and insights that are creating the business of the future.

What has been the highlight of your career in the industry to date?

I’ve been fortunate to have a wide-ranging financial services career, leading dynamic successful multi-site teams and building a breadth of experience in different companies, products and geographies. My career highlights are centred around whenever me and my team have made a transformational business impact, ie, successfully driving the power of analytics and insights into uncharted parts of the business while creating great partnerships with the senior business stakeholders. And it never ceases being a fantastic feeling to see the positive customer experiences and huge business value you are able to create with good data, an innovative mind and sharp analytics.

If you could give your younger self some advice about how to progress in this industry, what would it be?

Be creative and bold with your ideas and use of data and analytics. Explore multiple avenues and build breadth early in your career, so you can choose what you feel most passionate about. Build lasting relationships with colleagues so you can enjoy work - they prove invaluable in your career.

Did 2018 turn out the way you expected? If not, in what ways was it different?

2018 was always going to be an exciting year to be leading data and analytics in financial services, as personalisation, machine learning, APIs and technological innovation were at the heart of powering differentiation and shaping the business of the future. However, at the same time, the customer was at the heart of this innovation and, so, 2018 ended up being a year that was truly and incredibly rewarding. It was personally exciting to be leading this transformational information-led journey with the societal purpose of creating opportunities for people to rise.
