DataIQ Awards 2019 winner – New Talent: Caterina Constantinescu, data scientist, The Data Lab

DataIQ Awards 2019 winner - New Talent: Caterina Constantinescu

Caterina joined The Data Lab in 2017 while finishing her PhD at The University of Edinburgh, researching how emotion can be measured and classified using a custom app and algorithm – she was awarded her doctorate with no corrections. From this background of deep research, she has transitioned seamlessly into a team player with cross-functional skills.

Through her efforts, even while completing her studies, she has had a significant impact on The Data Lab’s three strategic pillars across industry, public sector and third sector projects. These include visitor forecasting for Historic Environment Scotland, verifying the impact of Circle, a charity helping disadvantaged families, and optimising transport usage patterns for local authorities in Scotland. She has also worked on internal projects, such as creating data guidelines, fair review models and data collection processes.

She has acted as a mentor in the Scottish Government Accelerator programme, supporting a worker in the NHS around health data visualisations, and also mentors interns at The Data Lab. Caterina was also responsible for creating DataTech, a sold-out one-day technical conference which ran as part of DataFest 2019.

Alongside all of this, she has organised an Edinburgh-based meet-up focused on R, engaged with Women in Computing and Data Science, contributed to blogs and podcasts, and generally evangelised for the role of data and analytics both in Scotland and internationally. The Data Lab identifies her as a top performer among early career practitioners and a future leading figure in the industry.
