In the three-and-a-half years since it launched, BDP has grown to over 165 staff, yet continues to have a very low employee attrition rate. It has achieved this through a unique combination of being 100% employee-owned, maintaining a family-like culture, and using unique incentives to keep consultants engaged and with a sense of purpose.
Recruiting and retaining good staff in the data and analytics sector is a constant challenge, yet is essential for a fast-growing business. While competitive salaries are part of this, it is the culture, reputation and benefits which have ensured BDP has attracted and kept skilled consultants.
As part of this, a rolling four-year reward programme based on performance and tenure, called BDP+, was created. It reflects client outcomes and staff achievement by giving points for self-study and certification, tenure (currently below the industry average at less than 11%) and client project performance. At the end of the reward period, staff can choose between a three-month pay bonus or a three-month paid sabbatical.
Career development is supported through BeSmart which allows each employee to advance at their own pace, fast-tracking to promotion if they wish or being promoted when ready. Monthly socials at each office keeps morale and team cohesion high. Ownership of the company by its full-time staff further embeds the sense of accountability and keeps attrition low. Word of mouth and referrals by staff has accounted for 20% of hires.
