Concerns about data privacy and data security are the top barriers to effective use of data and analytics with 43% of data professionals questioned stating that this is the case for their organisation. The survey, 2020 Global State of Enterprise Analytics, canvassed the opinions of 500 business intelligence and analytics professionals from five different countries.
Lack of training is holding back another 27% and for one in four, the solutions are too complicated. Another 25% said that their organisation lacks an analytics strategy and for 24% the tools they use are not intuitive or convenient for effective data use. Just under three out of ten (29%) said they are not working in a data democracy with access to data being limited across the organisation.
The data skills gap is also having an effect on organisations’ ability to use data in the best way with 27% saying that their organisation lacks the correct talent to make the best use of its data. Curiously, 18% of respondents said that using analytics is not a key focus for the organisation.
This statistic stands in stark contrast to the headline finding of the report which is that 94% of respondents said that data and analytics is important to their business growth and digital transformation. Last year this figure was 9 out of 10.
Research published in January 2019 stated that the data skills gap is narrowing but more needs to be done. Deloitte found that 18% of digital business leaders believed that school leavers and graduates had the right skills for the data workplace. This was an improvement on the previous year’s figure of 12%.
The report writers split the data users into the two main groups; the data deprived and the data privileged. Unluckily, the data deprived can spend a long time waiting for data, which will have an effect on productivity and efficiency. Among employees who are unskilled or less skilled in data, 36% have to wait a few minutes, 48% wait a few hours and 12% wait a few days. For a lucky 3% it is a few seconds and an unfortunate 1% wait longer than a few days.
Other noteworthy statistics from this survey are that 71% of respondents said that their company uses multiple tools or solutions and 38% said that more than half of their data is governed.
Hall & Partners, on behalf of Microstrategy, surveyed 500 business intelligence and analytics professionals from Brazil, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States between April and June of 2019. This is the second year Microstrategy has conducted this survey.
